Self-control is exactly what it sounds like! It means we stay in control of our actions and our words, even when it seems hard to do. Self-control shows maturity and is also a way of showing respect for those around us. This month at Championship Martial Arts, we will be teaching our students how Self-Control helps us to make good choices!!
In martial arts, self-control is demonstrated in everything we do. In sparring, we must remain in control so as not to injure our opponents or ourselves. As we work to develop great kicking technique, we have to have control over the speed, power, and aim of the kick. Without this control, we again run the risk of injuring ourselves or others. Great self-control is developed as we work on forms, or katas, and perfect techniques within them. A true martial artist is always in control of every aspect of their body, both physically and mentally.
Self-control at home is reflected in decisions we make everyday. Doing homework because we know it needs to be done instead of playing a video game shows that we are responsible for our actions. Going to bed at a reasonable time allows us to feel rested and have the energy we need to make it through the next day. In short, doing what we know needs to be done because it needs to be done, not because we are being told, is a great way to demonstrate self-control.
As we work on life lessons both on and off the mat, we become better versions of ourselves.
